Healthy Hummus Tips

I’m going to assume if you are reading this blog, you had tried hummus. Hummus has been around for centuries originating in the middle eastern countries. It is a wonderful party food and also a great side dish for any meal. It’s creamy, satiating, full of protein, and can be full of nutrients. 

I put the emphasis on “can be” because there is a lot of BAD hummus on the market today which is why I’m writing this blog. 

Homemade is Best

My hope is that you try to make your own, but when time doesn’t permit, I’d love for you to seek out the healthy brands and what to look for on the label.

One of the key ingredients in hummus is extra virgin olive oil. EVOO is known to be nutritious and a great source of omega 3’s (those healthy fats). We need healthy fat in our daily diet and EVOO packs a good punch as a healthy fat source.

When becoming a food label expert, one of the first disappointments I found was in hummus. I started with a very popular brand, and when I read it contained SOYBEAN OIL. I was shocked and disappointed, to say the least. 

Soybean oil is a seed oil (also called refined oil). These oils are a NO-GO in my book and you can read a past blog I wrote about oils HERE to learn supporting facts about oils. Seed oils are extremely inflammatory and if you want to get my blood boiling, just bring up the topic of refined oils. 

Seed/Refined oils are made with chemicals and go through a lengthy process in a factory and end up in clear plastic bottles or in a lot of our processed foods (like hummus). 

 

Storebought Hummus Selection

When you are buying hummus, be sure it contains Extra Virgin Olive Oil. If it contains soybean or canola oil, put it back on the shelf and walk away.

The moral of the story is even when assuming food is healthy, READ THE INGREDIENT LIST! Manufacturers do NOT have your health in mind. They want to make it the cheapest way possible.
